Frequently Asked Questions

What
are expired or expiring domains? What are expired or expiring domains?

Domain names are purchased for a period normally between 1 to 10 years. If at the end of that period the owner of the domain does not wish to pay the renewal fee, the domain is put back into the pool of eligible domain names for others to purchase. A domain that has not been renewed and has past its renewal date is said to have "expired".

What
is the domain lifecycle? What is the domain lifecycle?

There are 4 basic stages to the expiring domain lifecycle. The stages are:
  1. On-Hold :After a domain passes the expiration date, it enters the on-hold stage. This period varies by registrar, but usually lasts between 30 to 45 days. During this time the owner of the domain may still pay the registration fee and keep the domain.
  2. Redemption Period :The domain passes to the redemption period if the current registrant still hasn't renewed their domain after the on-hold period. This period normally lasts around 30 days. This is a time where the original registrant can still register their domain before it's deleted.
  3. Pending Delete :When the domain reaches the pending delete stage, the original registrant has lost the opportunity to register the domain. It is at this stage when these domains become available in our search engine and for backorder through ExpiredDomainHunter.com. The domain is put in pending delete status for a period of 5 days.
  4. Deleted :The final stage for an expired domain is when the domain is deleted from the registrar's database and made available for the public again. At this stage anyone interested in buying the domain can do so.

What
does it mean when an expired domain has traffic What does it mean when an expired domain "has traffic"?

A domain that is linked to by one or more other web sites is considered to have traffic. The more websites that link to that domain calculates to more traffic that is brought to that domain. People in the business of buying and selling domains can use that to their advantage by buying sites that already have traffic going to them and then use advertising on their site in order to profit from the traffic. At ExpiredDomainHunter.com we calculate the domains traffic based off of links found in some of the top search engines like Alta Vista, MSN and Hot Bot.
