Domain names are purchased for a period normally between 1 to 10 years. 1. On-Hold :After a domain passes the expiration date, it enters the on-hold stage. This period varies by registrar, but usually lasts between 30 to 45 days. During this time the owner of the domain may still pay the registration fee and keep the domain.
2. Redemption Period :The domain passes to the redemption period if the current registrant still hasn't renewed their domain after the on-hold period. This period normally lasts around 30 days. This is a time where the original registrant can still register their domain before it's deleted.
3. Pending Delete :When the domain reaches the pending delete stage, the original registrant has lost the opportunity to register the domain. 4. Deleted :The final stage for an expired domain is when the domain is deleted from the registrar's database and made available for the public again. At this stage anyone interested in buying the domain can do so.
